There are a few different types of air conditioning systems available. Each other type has pros and cons, and deciding on one depends on your needs and situations. The primary examples of air conditioning systems include:
- Traditional Split A/C Systems
- Ductless Mini-Split A/C Systems
- Package A/C Systems
- Swamp Coolers and Evaporative Coolers
Traditional Split A/C Systems
Traditional split air conditioning systems separate the evaporative section of the design from the condensing section. The two halves of the system are then linked via refrigerant lines. The evaporative side of the system cools the air by evaporating liquid refrigerant when air is passed over it. The condensing side condenses the vaporized refrigerant back to a liquid for the cycle to start again.
These are by far the most common types of air conditioning systems around. They are easy to install and maintain. The only unfortunate part about these systems is that they take up a large amount of space.
Ductless Mini-Split A/C Systems
Ductless mini-split A/C systems are the newest home air conditioning systems on the market. They work similarly to traditional split systems with one significant difference: they don’t use ductwork. Instead, they connect the evaporator to the condenser via refrigerant lines and then pump the cooled air directly from the evaporator coil into space (after passing it through a filter).
The biggest downside to these systems is that they are not designed to cool an entire home or business. Ductless split systems are best at cooling smaller spaces and individual rooms.
Package A/C Systems
Package A/C systems are different from either type of split system. They house the condenser and the evaporator sections of the system in one unit. These systems are usually reserved for cooling large, open spaces and commercial applications. You’ll find package A/C systems on the rooftops of most commercial buildings.
Swamp Coolers and Evaporative Coolers
Swamp coolers and evaporative coolers are the same things. However, they differ from split and package systems in that they do not use any refrigerant at all. Instead, they pass air through a pad soaked in water and then pump that air into the space to be cooled.
Swamp coolers are only valuable for dry, hot climates. If the humidity rises above 50%, then the effectiveness of a swamp/evaporative cooler drops exponentially.
