Over the years, I’ve been told that I exude confidence in certain situations, especially during meetings at work. To be completely honest, I felt like that was the LAST thing I was doing. I just wanted to carry myself with a certain level or degree of poise.
What does it mean to be confident? How does someone convey confidence in what they’re doing or saying?
Defining And Conveying Confidence
For me, I feel a sense of confidence after several occasions of doing the same thing the same way and seeing similar results. Or even trying something once and getting a positive result. Maybe that instance is just luck, but it still gives me confidence.
My gut is another item that I use to feel confident. Sounds weird, right? Well, I have learned over the last few years that I need to follow my gut instincts. I can’t tell you how many times my gut has screamed at me that something didn’t seem right, and it caused me to be leery. How does this translate to confidence? Even though there were times where I couldn’t initially put my finger on what was causing me to have that reaction, eventually, things presented themselves and confirmed my iffy feelings. This made me more confident in my gut that “it” knew that something was wrong, even if I couldn’t see it at first.
What do you do to make yourself feel more confident? Is it in the way you do your hair or the clothes you wear? Is it more of a sense of completing tasks on your to-do list, whether it’s at home or the office? Maybe it’s like me, where repeated success in certain circumstances gives you the boost of confidence.
Make Yourself Feel More Confident
Sometimes all it takes is repeating a positive affirmation to yourself. Something like, “You’ve got this!” My personal favorite positive affirmation is from a Saturday Night Live skit from the 90s where cast member Al Franken played the character Stuart Smalley. In every skit as this character, he’d say, “I’m good enough. I’m smart enough. And doggone it, people like me!”
Along those same lines, don’t speak negatively about yourself. Easier said than done for many of us, but this will help to put yourself in a more positive mindset and hopefully change the way you look and think of yourself.
If you need more ideas on how to feel more confident in your everyday life, there’s plenty of articles online or books you can purchase to help with this feeling. However, it won’t happen overnight, and you have to be patient with the process.
Each team member with Albuquerque Plumbing Heating & Cooling has the occasional struggle with confidence. It could be something like second-guessing yourself in a task that you’ve done before, wondering if you performed a task to your manager’s preferences, or even questioning a conversation with a coworker. We acknowledge that we’re human, and these instances will happen, and it’s how you overcome these times that matter the most. If we can do it, so can you.
