HVAC systems come in all different styles and sizes. Getting the correct one for your home is essential not just in keeping you comfortable but also in keeping your wallet nice and full.

Determining the Correct Capacity

Some contractors may look at your current HVAC units and tell you to buy a new one with the same capacity. This may not be best for you. HVAC units have probably changed a lot since you last had one installed. You should have a load assessment performed. This will determine exactly what the heating and cooling needs are for a home of your size. This assessment should include a heat-loss calculation that factors in walls, attics, floors, windows, and doors. These are all common locations for temperature-controlled air to escape.

Energy Efficiency

This will be one of the most important things to consider when shopping for a new HVAC unit. Your unit’s Seasonal Energy Efficiency Ratio (SEER) rating tells you how energy efficient it is. The higher the SEER rating, the more efficient it is. The U.S. Department of Energy dictates that any new split system central air conditioning unit installed in New Mexico must have a minimum SEER rating of 13. This does not mean you are limited to a 13 SEER HVAC unit. The higher the SEER rating, the more expensive the unit will be. However, higher SEER units will save you more money in the long run. Choosing the suitable unit for you involves balancing upfront costs with savings.
