While the yearly rainy season is essential for this dry climate, it can sometimes result in damage. Let us help you Prepare for Monsoon Season.
In general, monsoon season for New Mexico is late June through early September. During that time we can experience some awesome (but intense) storms. Our arid environment definitely benefits from the extra rain, but it can also produce some damaging effects. There are some things you can do around your house to help ward off potential storm damage. Prepare for Monsoon Season with these helpful tips from Albuquerque Plumbing Heating & Cooling.
Check Your Trees
Monsoon storms can often come with heavy winds. Talk a walk around your yard and look for any tree branches that look loose or fragile. Cut them off before the wind comes so they don’t end up causing damage.
Check Your Drains/Gutters/Walkways
When there is a light rain (hopefully before a big storm hits) grab an umbrella (assuming there is no lighting) and make sure that everything is draining properly. Ensure that there is nothing in the way of the drains (hoses, furniture, debris, etc). If a large monsoon comes through, proper drainage can save your home from water damage.
Check Your Garage
If you don’t normally park in the garage this is the perfect time of year to take a look at cleaning it out so you can. Wind, rain, and hail can all damage your car if it’s left outside during a monsoon storm.
Check Yourself
Try and stay put and inside when a monsoon is raging. Driving can be dangerous and flash flooding can occur without notice. Considering monsoons can often pass quickly, the wait is worth it.
Check Your Walls/Ceilings
After the storm has passed do a check around your home for any signs of leaking. Dark spots and bubbling can mean water is getting in. Catching and fixing a leak right away can save you money on more costly repairs later on.
Monsoon storms are a beautiful occurrence of nature, but nature can sometimes be mean. Prepare for Monsoon Season and keep yourself and your home safe.
