In recent years, more people have been pushing for and supporting local businesses. We’ve seen this with Small Business Saturday, which takes place the day after Black Friday during the holiday season when many consumers are in the big box stores.
How many of your favorite stores or shops are locally owned by fellow New Mexicans or Burqueños? Can you count all of them on one hand? How do you really know which ones are locally owned and operated?
Try Googling The Company In Question
Quite possibly the easiest way to find out if a business or company is locally owned or operated is simply by Googling them. I mean, isn’t that the first place most people go when they have a question or are looking for a service provider? Generally, some businesses are proud to note on their website that they’re locally owned, and some simply won’t disclose it either way.
If Google has some vague answers, you can always check the Better Business Bureau’s website to see if you’re looking at a local and legitimate business. You’ll also be able to see their rating and if they’re an accredited business. Still iffy? Trust your gut.
Just Ask Them
Another thing you can try, which is also the most direct, is asking the employees or owners of the company if they are locally owned. Our call center receives calls like this occasionally, where customers want to make sure that their own hard-earned dollars are being spent on businesses rooted in Albuquerque or New Mexico and not growing wings and flying to another state.
Are Burqueños asking that business owners have been born in Albuquerque? Not necessarily, but maybe that they have lived here longer than a few years and know and understand the needs and desires of New Mexicans.
